Back in 1999, their 1993 blended red of Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from the single vineyard in Gisborne is what I had and enjoyed the most.
These days, Matawhero was one of the very few wineries in New Zealand to hold its wines for several years before releasing, either in barrel, tank or bottle.
I also noted that they were giving their reds a lot longer maceration process than everyone else's.
Later on in 2015, I had some bottles of their 100% Malbec at a harbour restaurant in Wellington with my workmates on my business trip.
